Description
Commedia: Two Days of the Most Physical, Expressive Fun You Can Have Acting

Commedia uses half-masks (which means you can talk while playing a mask, while also living in a wildly expressive body). These masks represent archetypes: characters who exist across time, culture, and identity. For example: the rich old bastard. That person exists everywhere, and everyone can play them in their own way.

Commedia is rooted in a theatrical style from the Renaissance. But it is not the Renaissance now. I’m sorry to tell you. So Virginia has developed a particular approach that makes this work truly contemporary: playing these archetypes in our world, right now. (No bags of gold. No bags of gold.)

Here’s how you’ll grow:

  • Create physically and vocally inventive, deeply engaging characters based on archetypes, which are basically a cheat code for character work in almost everything: TV, theatre, film, and beyond.
  • Develop a fast, playful approach to improvisation and collaboration that helps you generate hilarious, surprising, and even beautiful material quickly, whether you’re an actor, stand-up, writer, singer, musician, or creative human of any kind.
  • Get funnier by being more fully yourself. This work tears open the door to the comic world and reveals just how hilarious and delightful you already are.

And truly: it is so fun to do and to watch. Current favorite student quote: “My face hurts from laughing so much!”

🗣️WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING
"I can’t express how happy I am with this course. Virginia is an exceedingly skilled instructor. Her notes and coaching made the course so valuable. Also the class really worked well together and we will keep in touch in an already formed group thread."

"Awesome class with an energetic teacher who was supportive and specific in her direction."

"I am so grateful for Virginia’s uncanny ability to push students into sometimes uncomfortable but always important spaces of self discovery. She not only structured and facilitated a very effective workshop but also was a constant model of the clown: finding delight, reacting honestly in the moment, and uncovering the zany, sad, ecstatic truths in the here and now."

"Virginia Scott is a wonderful educator -- I will take classes with her any chance I can!"
