🎬 Intro to Scripted Comedy for Improvisers

Are you an improviser curious about sketch comedy? This class is for you!

In this four-session class, you’ll learn how to take your ideas, characters, and comedic instincts from improv and transform them into sketches.

We’ll break down how comedic premises work, how to identify the “game” of a scene, and how improvisers naturally generate material that’s perfect for sketch. You’ll write, revise, and rehearse during the sessions, and finally perform your own scripted comedy in front of an audience.

🧠 What We’ll Explore

  • Identifying a strong comedic game: Creating characters worth exploring and heightening the game into a scriptable structure

  • Different sketch formats: Solo characters, group sketches, video-style pieces, musical comedy, etc.

  • Writing and rewriting material in a way that’s playful, clear, and focused

  • Acting, timing, & performance delivery: This class isn’t just about creating the material—it’s about performing it. We’ll rehearse blocking and pacing, character choices, vocal delivery, and physicality.

  • Classes: Sundays 1/25, 2/1, 2/8, 2/15

  • Time: 1:00–3:30 PM

  • Showcase: Thursday 2/19, 7 PM, CityState Brewing Company

  • Class size: Up to 8 students

🎟️ Prerequisites

  • Completion of two or more long-form improv classes

  • No prior sketch experience required

Erick is a Peruvian comedian based in Washington, DC, and has been performing improv comedy for over 15 years. During that time, he has received multiple comedy awards, including Best Comedy Show at the Capital Fringe, taught and performed in more than 20 cities across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe, and reached millions of viewers online. He has also been featured on comedy podcasts such as improv4humans and Improv Nerd.
