Improv & Mindfulness moves the focus to attention and awareness: noticing when we're on autopilot, becoming more aware of our thoughts and physical responses, recognizing reactivity without immediately acting on it, tolerating uncertainty, and practicing staying present when we don't know what's coming next. In this four-week course, we will explore the connection between these two practices through exercises, reflection, and practical tools you can use in everyday life.
You do not need any improv or meditation experience.
Over the course of four weeks, the class progresses through four broad ideas:
Week 1 – Wake Up: attention, awareness, and recognizing autopilot.
Week 2 – Stop Fighting Reality: acceptance, reactivity, mistakes, and working with what is actually happening rather than what we wanted to happen.
Week 3 – Your Thoughts Are Not the Boss: noticing thoughts as thoughts, creating a little space before reacting, and approaching our own internal commentary with curiosity.
Week 4 – Yes, And... Real Life: integrating mindfulness, self-kindness, presence, and play into everyday life.
We'll use exercises including Emotion Walks, mirroring, Sound Ball, One Word Story, Failure Bow, Fortunately/Unfortunately, New Choice, Slow-Motion Scenes, One-Breath Scenes, storytelling, and a very beginner-friendly introduction to the Harold. Each class will also begin with a short arrival practice and end with reflection connecting what happened during improv to life outside the theatre.
Why take this if you already took Improv & Self-Care?
Because knowing how to care for yourself and being able to notice yourself in real time are two totally different skills.
Self-Care asks questions like: What do I need? What boundaries do I need? How can I treat myself more compassionately?
Mindfulness asks: Where is my attention? What is my body doing? What story is my brain telling me? Am I listening or am I planning my response? What happens if I don't immediately fix, judge, or react to this?
Someone who took Self-Care will recognize the supportive, low-pressure structure of the class, but the exercises, learning goals, and conversations will be different. The goal isn't to be the funniest person in the room or achieve some perfectly peaceful state of mind. It's to practice being a little more present, curious, flexible, and kind to ourselves while having a ridiculous amount of fun.
Class is for adults (18+).
